About Foolkit

Testimonials

I want to congratulate you on putting together such an informative and useful website.  In my practice we utilise web resources as an integral part of delivery of legal services to our clients that range in size from SME’s that turn over $50M per annum down to mums and dads that are purchasing a home for their family.

There is a lot of information on the page but that’s part of the fun of the site…. exploring the information that is available on it.

I have distributed a firm wide email, particularly directed at my employed solicitors, asking all of my staff to bookmark www.foolkit.com.au in their web browser and to use it as a first point of reference.  What is even better about the Foolkit is that the  page displays excellently on my iPad which is an invaluable tool that I use whether in Court, in the office or with a client, presenting to them to attract new work or at the business premises of an existing client.

Congratulations once again. - B. N.  Lawyer

Thank you for sending me a letter about this wonderful site. It's now entrenched in my favourites at home and work.  Keep up the good  work and thanks again for making this public.   - Judge

Your website, Foolkit was brought to my attention by one of our lawyers and I would like to request the permission of making the link to your website accessible through our internal legal portal (restricted access). This would make your website accessible to all our Australian lawyers as well as our global lawyers.   - One of Australia’s largest companies.

A very helpful resource.   - H.B. Lawyer

Foolkit in the Media

Background

I originally wrote Foolkit for use in my own law firm.

My aim was to put all the practical resources of the internet in the one place, so that they would be at everyone's fingertips. I wanted to make it easier for everyone to find things without wasting time hunting around each time.

Foolkit was a great success in my office, so I started to share Foolkit with other lawyers. One of the earlier versions was briefly on the openinternet and I was surprised that so many of the public were looking for this information. I didn't think that the Lawyer content was very useful to them and I think that "a little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing" as far as the law is concerned. Once I had addressed this by writing the Public pages, I made Foolkit available to everyone.

Foolkit does not replace the paid subscription services and the commentary they provide. I have deliberately chosen information that is practical and will be used often. There were often mutliple sources that I could have included, but I have only chosen one or two. Which isn't to say that any that are left out are "not up to standard".

Foolkit now has over 13,000 URL's and is growing. What the user sees is "the tip of the iceberg" compared to the computing behind it. So, how does Foolkit survive? Foolkit is not a charity. Foolkit does not receive any support from any Law Foundation, Government or Law Society. People ask why I don't make people pay to use Foolkit. If it was a subscription service then this would exclude many of the users. Foolkit is looking for advertisers / sponsors who wish to promote themselves before lawyers and everyone else involved in the law or before the public who are looking for legal answers.

The Name?

  • The Free Legal Toolkit.
  • Foolkit is a toolkit where we gather our collection of tools. It always was a variation on the word Toolkit.
  • Because it was a unique but memorable domain name.
  • When you are a lawyer you are always juggling so many tasks at once. I was the original jester or fool.

How Big is Foolkit?

As at 19th May, 2013 it has over 500 pages, 6,436 Links, 1,685 items of Legislation and and 22,721 URL's.

Foolkit is the largest free legal information website in Australia based on the number and variety of resources. AustLII and ComLaw are larger in size but have a narrower range of resources
